Day 6 - Them!
Them! is a sci-fi film from 1954. Now, most, if not all of the movies viewed in this filmfest are horror movies, Them! counts because it is really one of the first creature features. That's right folks. Creature. Features. Long story short: people are going missing. When these disappearances are investigated, they find the culprits to be gigantic ants. Yup. You read that right. Giant ants. The rest of the movie is about finding a way to destroy every last one, as well as save two young boys that were captured by the ants. Clearly, this film has a strong message about the dangers of the use nuclear weapons and the aftermath of such blasts. Luckily, it isn't as preachy as some. Also, this movie was nominated for an Oscar. Granted, it was for special effects, but still. An Oscar nod is an Oscar nod. It set the pace for all creature features that followed.
Best Part:
This is a tough one. It could be the "awesome" effects when the ants are attacking the human characters. Maybe it's the fact that a giant ant dies if you shoot off both of its antennae (that's right, two clean shots to the antennae is all you need). Nay, I must say that the best part of this movie is any scene in which a flamethrower is used. My reasoning? Flamethrowers are awesome.
