This year was an amazing Con. I had a blast, spent a bunch, walked all day, and my only complaint is that if you're going to stop to check something out in one of the aisles, TAKE A STEP OFF TO THE SIDE & GET OUT OF EVERYBODY'S WAY! Which reminds me: here are some tips to make your (and everybody else's) convention outing a positive one.
- Wear comfy shoes. Nobody wants to hear you bitch about your feet hurting because you opted for fashionable, yet uncomfortable shoes. If you choose to not heed this advice, suffer in silence.
- Plan ahead. Know which panels/meet & greets you want to go to & make a schedule. NYCC has an awesome app to do this. It helps keep you from being overwhelmed by the sheer size & craziness of the event.
- Be prepared. Have a pen/Sharpie/writing implement with you, just in case.
- Bring some water and/or a snack. It'll save you some money, but, more importantly, will give you the necessary energy/hydration to hold you over until you have the chance to get some real food.
- Be respectful to the convention guests. Sure, you've read their books or watched them on the screen, but they're people, too. Ask permission before you take a picture.
- Be respectful to your fellow fans. You aren't the only person at the con. If you see somebody trying to take a picture, don't be the asshole that walks in front of the camera. And for God's sake, get out of the way when you're stopping in the aisles!
- If you're 21, and they're selling alcohol, treat yourself. You need some downtime, and you probably have to charge your media device. I found that taking a breather & having a beverage can get you in the right mindset to enjoy the con to it's fullest extent.
All I know is that October 11-14, 2012 cannot come soon enough.
I repeat: suck it nerds.
